Minecraft Unbreaking Enchantment — Levels & Durability Explained

Unbreaking does not add durability points — it makes each use less likely to consume durability. The distinction matters: the effect is a probability, so the practical lifetime of a tool grows several-fold, and it stacks with Mending to make gear effectively permanent.

How the chance works

Each time durability would be consumed, Unbreaking gives a chance the durability is not spent. The probability depends on the level and the item type; for most tools Unbreaking III means roughly a 3× longer life, and in practice the average durability is multiplied by (level + 1) for most items.

Its role with Mending

Mending restores durability from experience; Unbreaking means fewer repairs are needed in the first place. Together they are the standard 'forever tool' combination on pickaxes, swords, armour and the elytra — you repair rarely and never replace.

Where to prioritise it

Put Unbreaking III on anything you use constantly: your main pickaxe, sword, bow, elytra and armour. It is cheap to obtain (a common table offer and a librarian trade) and it multiplies the value of every other enchantment you add.

FAQ

What does Unbreaking actually do?
It gives a chance that durability is not consumed on use, rather than adding extra durability points. Higher levels raise the chance, so the tool lasts longer in practice.
How much longer does Unbreaking III last?
For most items, the effective durability is roughly multiplied by four at level III (level + 1), though the exact figure is probabilistic and varies by item type.
Do I need Unbreaking if I have Mending?
Yes — they complement each other. Unbreaking reduces how often durability is lost; Mending repairs what is lost. Without Unbreaking you rely on a steady supply of experience just to keep tools alive.
Does Unbreaking work on armour?
Yes. Unbreaking reduces the chance of durability loss from every hit, which is why Unbreaking III is standard on all four armour pieces.
