Minecraft Feather Falling Enchantment — Fall Damage Explained

Feather Falling reduces fall damage on the boots, and unlike most protection enchantments its effect is immediately obvious: drops that would kill you become survivable. It has four levels and is one of the four enchantments most players put on every pair of boots.

How much it reduces

Feather Falling reduces fall damage by roughly 12% per level, so IV cuts fall damage by about 48% before other reductions apply. Combined with the Protection line and the slow-falling effect, it makes long drops survivable that would otherwise be fatal.

The standard boots kit

Most players run Feather Falling IV, Protection IV, Unbreaking III and Mending on their main boots; Depth Strider III replaces Depth Strider's slot when watery travel matters, and Soul Speed goes on a separate pair for nether travel. Because Depth Strider and Frost Walker conflict, keep a second pair if you need both.

Where it pays off

  • Exploring ravines and cave systems with long drops
  • Building at height
  • Nether travel over lava and cliffs
  • Falling in the End while fighting the dragon
  • Any hardcore world, where a single fall ends the run

FAQ

What is the max Feather Falling level?
Feather Falling IV. It is a normal enchantment available from the table and from librarians, so it is straightforward to obtain at max level.
Does Feather Falling stack with Protection?
Yes — they apply to different damage types and both reduce fall damage, so the combination is better than either alone.
Does it remove fall damage entirely?
No. It reduces it substantially but a very long fall can still hurt or kill. Only the Slow Falling potion or an elytra removes the risk completely.
Does Feather Falling work without boots?
No, it must be on the boots you are wearing to take effect.
