Minecraft Depth Strider Enchantment — Levels & How It Works

Depth Strider reduces the drag of water, letting you move almost as fast in water as on land. It is a boots-only enchantment with three levels, and it conflicts with Frost Walker — a choice that matters most when you are crossing an ocean or exploring an ocean monument.

What Depth Strider changes

Water normally slows movement significantly and reduces jump height. Depth Strider reduces that drag per level, so at level III you move through water at close to your land speed. It affects horizontal movement and lets you jump in water more normally.

Depth Strider vs Frost Walker

The two enchantments conflict on boots. Depth Strider keeps you fast in existing water; Frost Walker freezes water into ice as you walk. Choose by terrain: Depth Strider for oceans, rivers and the nether's lava oceans (with fire resistance), Frost Walker for crossing frozen or dangerous liquid surfaces at speed.

Where it earns its place

Ocean travel, ocean monument raids, drowned farming and any build near water benefit. It also helps when mining under water and when crossing the nether's magma field corners. Pair it with Respiration and Aqua Affinity on the helmet for a complete underwater kit.

FAQ

What is the max Depth Strider level?
Depth Strider III. At level III water movement is close to full land speed, which is why it is the standard ocean boots enchantment.
Does Depth Strider work in lava?
No — it affects water only. Lava movement is unaffected (Fire Resistance is the relevant protection).
Can I have Depth Strider and Frost Walker?
No, they conflict on the same boots. Pick one according to the terrain you travel most.
Does Depth Strider help while swimming with a boat?
No, it affects your own movement. Boats and elytra are unaffected.
